About

I’m Beth, and Elizabeth Wallis – Outdoor Activities is the trading name of my outdoor work. Based in the heart of Scotland, Highland Perthshire,  I’ve been working in the outdoors since I realised you could play out for a living aged 15.

Over the years I’ve found myself soaking up life wisdom from 80+ year olds walking the lakeland fells and from pre-schoolers as I provide a safety net to their risky play. I’ve dodged traffic cones and trolleys paddling inner city canals and dodged leaping salmon paddling Scotland’s classic rivers. I’ve spent long nights sat in corridors sending children back to bed and long starry fireside nights with adults whose nights are usually lit by streetlights. I’ve spent slow days walking up hills with young people who’ve never walked on mud and speedy days ticking off 7 Munros then canoeing back to the start. I’ve cried with people who’ve found the empty solitude of the loch a safe place to share their pain and struggle. I’ve celebrated all that is good about life and love on mountain summits. There’s been expedition days and great conversation with people enjoying the freedom and with young people at risk of losing their freedom. I’ve coached adults into remembering how to play and teenagers into realising just how capable they are. I’ve had hundreds of tent nights on tiny islands, mountains, river banks, school playing fields and memorably, Morrisons car park.

The two common themes in these moments and all the others are people and place, and adventure.

I am all about people. I do what I do because I believe in potential. I love to see people develop and thrive. We are deeply connected to and impacted by our place in the world and the places we journey through.

Adventure means something different to everyone. To me its something that gives us chance to explore, to connect with and to enjoy people and places.

Whatever adventure looks like to you, Elizabeth Wallis – Outdoor Activities is here to enable and equip you to have it and enjoy it. It’s a privilege to be invited into people’s adventures and we can’t wait to share them with you!

Core Values

Where are we?

Everyone's invited!

These values underpin everything we do. Sometimes they are obvious, other times less so. We believe they should be public partly to hold us to account and partly in the hope that when you join us for adventures you can buy into them too.

We’re based in Highland Perthshire, almost right in the middle of Scotland. Often overlooked in favour of the national parks that border it, it offers stunning locations to suit every adventure. That said, there’s so much to explore in Scotland, so we’re often found “out west” or “up the A9” too.

“Diversity is being invited to the party; Inclusion is being asked to dance” Verna Myers.

Core Values

Integrity. We do what we say we will do.

Inclusion. Everyone who wants to should have access to meaningful adventure.

Excellence. We are well qualified and refresh our skills regularly. We work alongside other providers to share ideas and challenge our thinking. We actively seek feedback and use it to improve.

Safety. We work in dynamic environments that require good judgement, flexibility and humility. We will make sound decisions based on knowledge, experience and what is happening in front of us. We work to ensure physical and emotional safety.

Treading lightly. We are proactive about minimising our impact and encourage guests to join us in that. We use resources wisely, travel responsibly, support local businesses and choose Fairtrade wherever that’s an option.

Play. We learn best when we’re having fun. Play is serious business!

Curiosity. We ask questions. We learn. We challenge ourselves and try new things. We give ourselves permission to fail. We aim to ignite your curiosity too.

Where are we?

There’s plenty of water. Loch Tay stretches 17 miles long with Loch Tummel and Faskally nearby. Of course there’s the river Tay, but also the Tummel, Garry, Blackwater and Lyon and many more quality rivers. The vast Rannoch moor is close by too.

For walkers, there’s the majestic Ben Lawers range, Schiehallion where the world was weighed and a host of Corbetts and Grahams. There’s Glen Lyon, the “longest, lonliest and lovliest glen in Scotland”, long distance trails and stunning waterfall and low level walks.

Perthshire is known as Big Tree Country with 200,000 acres of woodlands to explore including Britain’s widest tree, a 130-year-old giant redwood and one of the best examples of ancient Caledonian forest in Scotland.

For wildlife lovers, there’s red squirrels at every turn in the woods and rumours of capercaille. Osprey and red kites soar overhead and salmon, beavers and otters around the water courses. Red deer roam the high hills along with black grouse and other moorland birds.

Everyone that wants to should be able enjoy meaningful adventure, whatever that means to them. We realise that for some people enjoying adventure in the outdoors has added challenges to overcome. Whether the barrier is a disability, financial situation, cultural perception or something else entirely we have the experience, training and imagination to make adventure accessible to all.

There’s lots we can do to make sure as many people as possible can join in.

For example, using venues that are accessible by public transport.Planning routes with ‘proper’ toilets. Shuffling the timings of a day around routines, medication, energy levels, religious obligations. Keeping essential medication dry and in the right place.

We try hard to communicate in the best way for you – speech, text, video, Makaton, BSL, Translation tools.

We have great links with other providers and organisations to access specialist adaptive equipment and expertise.

Testimonials

We love to learn and want to do the best job we can at helping people explore, connect with and enjoy time outside. We’ve all got blind spots and we don’t know what we don’t know so we always ask for feedback. You don’t have to give it, and we’ll graciously accept it in any form. We’ll work hard to change what needs changing and celebrate what’s worked.

Jenn C

“Beth is a fab coach and person! She helped me to get my confidence back and enabled me to get out and enjoy kayaking again! Great fun to be with and is always flexible to do what you feel comfortable with whilst encouraging you to challenge yourself. Thank you so much for getting me back on the water. “

Hannah B

“Having spent a few sessions in a kayak on whitewater with coaching from Beth, I can absolutely recommend her. In just a short time she has completely transformed the way I feel about getting on the water. She has done this with a combination of river choice and exercises pitched at absolutely the right level, a calm reassuring nature, the right words to instill confidence, and a few really great simple technical tips that have stuck in my head. Plus a bit of psychological word swapping that is really helping to change my mindset – I feel “secure” not “tight” in my boat now!”

Will M, IOL Coach

“Beth has clearly spent a lot of time reflecting on the journey she has taken in the outdoors field.  Whilst she talks about ‘falling into’ her career, I am more inclined to think that she is a particularly good fit, perhaps there is less chance and more destiny!”

Dave W

“Beth has a strong sense of equality and the need for adaptability when
working with others who share different values. She is also very good at creating a sense of inclusiveness, often drawing in those on the fringes of a group.”

Barrett family

“A lovely teaching style and an absolute mine of information. I couldn’t recommend Elizabeth more highly”

ABC Nursery

“The kids really love their adventures with you!!”
